Clowns' Houses

BENEATH the flat and paper sky
The sun, a demon's eye,
Glowed through the air, that mask of glass;
All wand'ring sounds that pass
Seemed out of tune, as if the light
Were fiddle-strings pulled tight.
The market-square with spire and bell
Clanged out the hour in Hell;
The busy chatter of the heat
Shrilled like a parakeet;
And shuddering at the noonday light
The dust lay dead and white
As powder on a mummy's face,
Or fawned with simian grace
Round booths with many a hard bright toy
And wooden brittle joy:
The cap and bells of Time the Clown
That, jangling, whistled down
Young cherubs hidden in the guise
Of every bird that flies;
And star-bright masks for youth to wear,
Lest any dream that fare
--Bright pilgrim--past our ken, should see
Hints of Reality.
Upon the sharp-set grass, shrill-green,
Tall trees like rattles lean,
And jangle sharp and dissily;
But when night falls they sign
Till Pierrot moon steals slyly in,
His face more white than sin,
Black-masked, and with cool touch lays bare
Each cherry, plum, and pear.
Then underneath the veiled eyes
Of houses, darkness lies--
Tall houses; like a hopeless prayer
They cleave the sly dumb air.
Blind are those houses, paper-thin
Old shadows hid therein,
With sly and crazy movements creep
Like marionettes, and weep.
Tall windows show Infinity;
And, hard reality,
The candles weep and pry and dance
Like lives mocked at by Chance.
The rooms are vast as Sleep within;
When once I ventured in,
Chill Silence, like a surging sea,

Here I have selected my favorite vintage Halloween postcards. Most are from around 1915 to the 20's. I do like the recurring themes of witches, devils, black cats, pumpkins and jack o lanterns, ghosts and magic mirrors. Not to mention owls and bats and the full moon.

One of my favorite romantic films is the 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet. For the first time the characters were played by actors who were still in their teens, and the production is beautiful and lavish.
The last 7 photos are from various magazine pictorials in modern dress, and Olivia and Leonard at an awards night.

I do love vintage original movie posters. I have several hundred all stored flat in a plans press filing cabinet. Out of these I only have the French 'Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte', and the 'Honeymoon Killers' posters. But these are all posters I find visually stimulating graphically, and aesthetically. The first poster, 'The Witches' with Silvana Mangano is absolutely stunning. I have a different Italian poster from that, and 2 sets of lobby cards. The Vendetta poster you will remember from the set of 'Friends'. The Sunset Boulevard poster here is particularly dark...and very Medusa don't you think. The Barbara Stanwyck poster is amazing..its for The Night Walker..a William Castle film. But Marlene Dietrich in The Devil Is A Woman is just magnificent... from my all time favorite film. That film has it all, sheer glamour and artificiality, with an s&m undercurrent... visually stunning beyond belief.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

Famous reply (In part only) 'Yes Virginia. There is a Santa Claus' from New York Sun (1897) to a little girl named Virginia, who wrote in questioning the existence of Santa Claus.

Response to a good friend on Youtube who on learning I only wear black said 'Black is dull'.......... Black was once restricted to wearing as 'Sunday Best', Weddings, Evening wear or for funerals and mourning. Priests and the clergy wore black. Then those associated with being outside of conventional society claimed it. It was suddenly associated with anti establishment, devil worshipers, bikies, skin-heads, rockers, punks, emo's and goths. Not to mention bohemians beatniks intellectuals and other undesirables. To me I can wear black and be me. Before you condemn, you must understand most everyone wears black in Melbourne. It is the blackest wearing city in the world. When C and I travel to the States people automatically think we're in a band or something worse. Their fear of black fascinates me.

HEARSES AND FUNERAL VEHICLES : THOUGHTS

I love old hearses, particularly the grandeur of them. I like big American hearses the most, from the peak of the 50's into the 60's. I also like to find out what make of hearse was used to bury the famous like Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Elvis Presley or JFK. Hearses in films always fascinated me. The funerals then seemed dignified and other worldly. Famous 'hearse' or 'funeral' movies include 'Imitation of Life', maybe the best funeral scene ever. It has Mahalia Jackson herself singing in the church, the long lost 'white' daughter, throwing herself on her 'black' mothers casket...and of course Lana Turner's overacting....its a sumptuous Douglas Sirk /Ross Hunter film. And then of course the ultimate funeral parlor film 'The Loved One'...too many scenes to mention here. Also notable 'Harold and Maude'...about a young boy and elderly woman who meet as they go to funerals for fun. The one of a kind hearse in that, made from a Jaguar E Type, of all cars, actually went over the cliff in the film, and in reality. So it is no more.
